A personal OV chip card is useful if

You need the following to apply for a personal OV-chipkaart:

A clear (passport) photo without distracting filters (maximum 5 MB);

iDeal or PayPal (for Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg).

Have you lost your personal card? Block your card as soon as possible. Your card will be blocked at 00:00 the next day at the latest. Until then, you bear the risk of losing your balance.

Good to know: a blocked card cannot be unblocked.

Block (and replace) your lost or stolen OV-chipkaart

No worries. You can now block (and replace) your lost card without your account via this online tool.

Is your personal OV-chipkaart really broken or is something else going on? Check this with these steps:

- Negative balance? Then you can no longer check in before you top up your card balance. After that you can travel again.

- Forgot to check out? After twelve times your card will be blocked. You can have the block removed at a service desk of the carrier you last checked in with.

- Automatic reloading on your card? Then your balance may be temporarily blocked because direct debits have failed. You can read here how you can still pay and how to remove the block.

- To be sure that your card is defective, you can have the card read out at a service desk. 

Is your OV-chipkaart really broken? Block and replace the card online

An OV-chipkaart expires after five years. There may be remaining balance on your card. Of course you can get this back. Even if your card has not yet expired, you can request a refund. After all, it's your money.

How you request a refund depends on your card type (anonymous or personal) and the status of your card (expired or not yet expired).

Is there a wrong name, passport photo or date of birth* on your card? Request a replacement card. A replacement card costs € 11 and you will receive it within three working days.

You will receive the balance of your old card within 15 days

Active subscriptions will be transferred to the replacement card

*Since January 2020, the date of birth is no longer visible on the card.

Change details and replace your OV-chipkaart

An OV-chipkaart is valid for five years. After that, you can no longer travel with it. You can renew a personal card online for € 7.50 via your account. You will then receive a new card with your subscriptions and products on it. You will receive the remaining balance on your bank account within 15 days after the expiry date of the card. Don't need a new card? You can also only request a refund of your balance.

Good to know: subscriptions and/or products that you transfer to your old card on the day you renew your card will not be transferred. Products that you put on the old card after applying for your renewed card will also not be transferred. At Card information you can see which products and subscriptions we put on the updated card.

Contact OV-chipkaart Customer Service on 0900-0980 (usual costs). Is there balance on the card? Then you will receive the amount in your bank account within 15 days. 

Do you want to terminate the card online? We work together with Closure. You can then immediately select other organizations where you still want to cancel or take over subscriptions.
